Thinking back, the only thing I did out of the ordinary was try the Android emulator @dglt mentioned, it hung up and I hard reset, but was this a coincidence or a conspiracy????
It hasn't done it since, but before I restored, it was progressively getting worse.
I would reboot, then open a browser (FF devel), all the tabs would spin, then nothing, screen looked fine, but could not interact with it, then I would notice the lights flashing
So something says network / wifi card problems to me, but the restore fixed it.
I run on btrfs, so I checked the file system and defragged for good measure after the restore.
